Ontario Opening New Finch West LRT
December 5, 2025
Province relieving gridlock and connecting more than 51,000 daily riders to more convenient transit
The Ontario government is celebrating the official opening of the Finch West Light Rail Transit (LRT) in Toronto, marking a major milestone in the province’s plan to protect Ontario by relieving gridlock and connecting more people to jobs and homes. The new transit line will begin operating under the TTC on December 7, 2025, bringing 230,000 more people within walking distance of fast and reliable transit and moving more than 51,000 riders each weekday.
“The opening of the Finch West LRT is terrific news for commuters, delivering a fast, reliable and affordable way to travel across Toronto’s northwest,” said Premier Doug Ford. “Our government will continue investing in the largest infrastructure plan in Canadian history — building highways, roads and subways — to get families and workers out of gridlock and keep Ontario moving.”
The line, also known as Line 6 Finch West, includes two stations and 16 stops across more than 10 kilometres and is projected to carry 12 million riders annually by 2031. It runs on a dedicated, primarily street-level track along Finch Avenue West, from Finch West Station on TTC Line 1 (Yonge-University) to Humber Polytechnic’s North Campus at Humber College Station. The Finch West LRT will offer convenient connections to local and regional transit, including TTC buses, GO Transit, MiWay, York Region Transit and Brampton Züm, making transfers simple and affordable so people spend less time in traffic and more time at home.
“In the face of economic uncertainty, our government is delivering results for Ontarians by making historic investments in transit infrastructure in the GTA and beyond,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “The Finch West LRT will give hundreds of thousands of commuters more options to get where they need to go and help protect Ontario by connecting more workers to good-paying jobs.”
As part of the government’s plan to protect Ontario, the province is investing $70 billion in the largest expansion of public transit in North America to shorten travel times, reduce gridlock and drive economic growth across the region.
“Line 6 Finch West is here and it belongs to the people who will ride it every day,” said Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto. “Thank you to the builders, the TTC workers who will operate the line and the neighbourhoods along the corridor who made this possible. With the TTC fare freeze now in place for three years, more residents will have the reliable, accessible and affordable transit they deserve, and Toronto continues to be a caring city that delivers.”
